Local Authority CCTV design and installation

Location:
Dunstable, Bedfordshire
Sector:
Public Sector

We were appointed to review the CCTV system of part the National Cycle Route: six in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. Our client required a high standard of design and installation to reflect their approach to public safety and responsibilities in monitoring Public Space CCTV. Additionally, Innovative means of installation and transmission were required due to the remote location as there was no existing CCTV infrastructure.

By adopting value engineering techniques, we were able to provide additional CCTV protection at the same time as reducing on-going costs by utilising future-facing technology.

Our solution included the provision of Wi-Fi technology to transmit wirelessly between the CCTV cameras on-site and Central Bedfordshire council’s CCTV monitoring station. Existing infrastructure assets were used for power supply, thereby reducing the environmental impacts of civil engineering works and costs to our client. The innovative use of Wi-Fi technology had a further benefit of reducing long-term rental costs over fibre cable.

Systems of winch towers were installed with infra-red, white light and audio, increasing the capability of the system operators to monitor all areas in all conditions.

A mixture of analogue and IP solutions was required to fully integrate the installation into the existing monitoring station platform to allow for future compatibility to a full IP solution and expansion, thereby future-proofing Central Bedfordshire Council’s CCTV technical requirements.

Additionally, our consideration of the legal requirements of the Information Commissioner's Office relating to personal data and protecting people’s privacy meant that the solution we provided was proportionate and commensurate to the security risk, whilst also balanced against public privacy considerations in public spaces.
